Session Abstract

The Urban Working Group Meeting

(Friday October 27, 8.30-12.30)

will comprise:

  1. A roundtable on 20 Years of Cities and Climate Change Research

featuring interventions and debate among a number of speakers (including Harriet Bulkeley, Michele Betsill, Chris Gore, and Sander Chan).

Marking the publication of the landmark study Cities and Climate Change (Bulkeley and Betsill, 2003) as the point of departure, this session will reflect on how cities were integrated into global environmental research and how the scholarship has evolved over the two past decades. A number of speakers have been invited to share their thoughts on the legacy of this publication, key milestones and junctures in this field of research, the current state of the art, and remaining gaps in knowledge.

  2. Interventions on current/future directions in cities and climate change research

provided by members of the ESG UWG (Devon Cantwell-Chavez, Lauri Peterson, and Patience Mguni) and followed by group discussion.

The interventions will reflect on emergent themes in the work of urban scholars to charter the direction of the debate in urban environmental governance research. They will connect with the topic of cities and climate change in different ways, including through empirical, methodological, or conceptual overlaps, and be followed by a group discussion.

  3. Urban working group business

Co-conveners of the ESG UWG will provide an update on the activities and progress of the Working Group achieved over the past year and hold a structure, participative discussion around opportunities and plans for collaboration moving forward.
