His primary research interest is energy efficient control of indoor air quality with a focus on control of bioaerosols using germicidal ultraviolet light. Dr. Bahnfleth is the author or co-author of more than 180 journal articles and 15 book chapters and books. He has served ASHRAE in many capacities, including as 2013-14 Society President and chair of the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force. His ASHRAE awards include the Exceptional Service Award, the Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award, the E.K. Campbell Award of Merit for teaching, and the F. Paul Anderson Award, ASHRAE’s highest individual honor. His work as chair of the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force has been recognized with a letter of appreciation from the US EPA and the ASHRAE Presidential Certificate of Honor. Ventilation for Airborne Infection Risk Mitigation – What We’ve Learned from the Covid-19 Pandemic Guidance for engineering controls to reduce exposure of building occupants to infectious aerosols has focused heavily on increasing outdoor air flow rates, upgrading filter efficiencies, and addition of standalone filtration and disinfection technologies. Less attention has been devoted to air distribution, however, there is a growing awareness of its significance. This presentation will consider a number of important ways in which well-conceived air distribution can enhance the effectiveness of a risk mitigation strategy and how future HVAC system designs may change as a result. |
