Plenary 1: Central Europe in the EU: Actorness, Engagement, and Impact
11:00am - 12:45pm
Tomáš Weiss
Session Chair: Tomáš Weiss
More than 20 years after the Big Bang enlargement, the countries of Central Europe still struggle to come to terms with their EU membership. This plenary session examines how the region has exercised actorness - how it defines interests, mobilises influence, and shapes outcomes across EU policy arenas. From debates on the rule of law and energy security to shifting geopolitical priorities, Central European engagement has left a distinct imprint on the Union\'s agenda and internal dynamics. By highlighting key moments of regional impact and exploring the evolving strategies behind them, the plenary will discuss how Central Europe’s voice is transforming both its role in the EU and the Union’s broader trajectory.

Professor Emilian Kavaski (Centre for International Studies and Development)
Mr. David Kral (Director-General of the Department for European Affairs)
