Teaching European Studies 3

Chair(s): Jan Grzymski (Jagiellonian University, Kraków)

It is the third panel in a block of three educational panels that aim to share European Studies academics' experience in teaching methods that engage students in innovative ways.

There is a pressing need to tackle students' digital distraction, growing AI usage by students, and the post-pandemic need for more interactive activities in the classroom. Teaching in such conditions is becoming more demanding than ever before. This panel offers a few examples of how European Studies teachers could address it through interactive teaching methods.

In the first part, the panellists will present their experience of:

- using acting and theatre techniques in the classroom

- summer school methodologies

Presenters will discuss their inspiration and intention to use or develop their teaching method, challenges encountered during implementation, and students' reactions.

Following the presentations, there will be a round table format for all panel attendees to discuss their experiences and relate them to the presentations. We will also consider how these methods could be incorporated into higher education, public policy, and NGOs' educational and civic training, including challenges like educators' experience with active learning methods and funding constraints.

The panel also aims to establish a network of European Studies teachers who wish to work on possible joint educational projects. These could include using games and simulations, quizzes, group work methodologies, and preparing teaching materials for educational platforms. The panel could initiate discussions about future joint projects focusing on educational workshops, collaborative projects, working on summer school methodologies, or designing educational games or simulations.

This panel is linked to two other panels:

TEACHING EUROPEAN STUDIES 1 (Monday, September 2, 9:00-10:30 pm): Using educational games (one based on digital software and the other one a board game) and interactive methods and tasks to engage students (gallery walk seminar, the mystery class (crowdsourced session), speed dating discussions and peer-to-peer feedback).

TEACHING EUROPEAN STUDIES 2 (Monday, September 2, 2:00-3:30 pm): Playing and presenting educational games discussed in Panel 1.

Acting and Theatre Techniques

Marylou Hamm
EUI

I have been integrating acting and theatre techniques into my teaching at the Université libre de Bruxelles for two years. In collaboration with François Foret and then Céleste Bonnamy, we established a partnership with the Théâtre National de Bruxelles and a theatre company. This initiative aimed to guide students (undergraduate level) in presenting their qualitative research findings in a theatrical format. Specifically, students presented their data by writing a story based on their observed social roles and the empirical elements they collected. This story was then presented through a theatre performance. We aimed to encourage an active engagement with the classic themes and methodologies of political science on Europe, particularly in the field of political sociology. For example, students worked on topics such as public attitudes towards the European Union and the 'way of life' of Brussels citizens.

Summer School Methodology

Spasimir Domaradzki
University of Warsaw

This presentation will discuss the process of creating a methodology for summer school with training kits for the university professors and assistants about Balkan and CEE history to address the existing stereotypes and prejudice. The project ReNewEurope's innovative methodology aims to develop the competencies of the university professors and assistants in on-wheel school organisation and conduction with students interested in Balkan and CEE history. It also stressed the importance of a deeper understanding of the region in the "Old" and "New" Europe states by defining the main principles and approaches for stimulating the sociocultural competencies of the higher education teaching staff.
