The Armenian-Azerbaijani war of 2020, the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the EU in 2021, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, violent clashes between Serbia and Kosovo in 2023, and rising tensions between Albania and Greece – the last years have seen a number of armed and unarmed conflicts in Europe that, in their intensity and frequency, shook the continent to its core. While none of these conflicts were internal to the EU, they will certainly have a tremendous effect on its future course, be it in terms of enlargement, its neighbourhood policy, or common foreign and security policy. The idea behind the panel is to bring together experts of – and partly from – the aforementioned European non-EU countries to explore the foundation, form and future of their relations with the EU against the backdrop of said conflicts. The proposed panel is part of a larger book project on “Non-EU Europe” that seeks to identify patterns of interaction between the EU and its European neighbours that can inform our understanding of differentiated integration, both within and beyond the EU. After a short introduction by the editors, Jakob Lempp and Jan Niklas Rolf, the following panelists will discuss the following topics:
