2024 European Parliament Elections: Results and Consequences

Chair(s): Emanuele Massetti (University of Trento)

Presenter(s): Julie Hassing Nielsen (Lund University), Julia Schulte-Cloos (University of Marburg), Julie Smith (University of Cambridge), Ben Crum (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam)

This session aims to analyse the campaign and the results of the EP elections in specific countries and across the EU, highlighting continuity and change vis-à-vis previous elections in respect to presence/visibility vs. absence/invisibility of ‘lead-candidates’, themes of the campaign, turnout, Europeanisation vs. 2nd order election, trends in socio-cultural and socio-economic determinants of voting behavior.

Referring to the post-election process - formation of a new European Commission with a new agenda and appointment of a new President of the European Council – the session also analyses the effects of the 2024 election on the power relations amongst parties, member-states and EU institutions.
