The European Union and re-discovery of ‘geopolitics’

Chair(s): Vincent Della Sala (University of Trento)

This session aims to analyse the re-orientation of the EU in its relations with global actors or world regions as a result of the increasingly tense relations between ‘the West’, on one side, and Russia and/or China, on the other hand. The development of the war in Ukraine and the re-explosion of violence in Israel and Palestine represent severe security challenges that the EU is trying to address, also with important repercussions on EU-NATO relations. Finally, we would like that this devotes some attention to EU’s relations towards the global south, which represents not only a field for global competition between ‘the West’ and China/Russia, but also an area in which ‘local actorness’ is being strengthened and new global/regional actors are emerging.
