This panel deals with the intersection of education and human rights in the field of international social work. Education is a human right that plays an important role in key human rights documents. It is a multiplier for all other human rights, promoting their realization when guaranteed. How do education and human rights come together under conditions of the pandemic and global post-colonial inequalities? The contributions to this panel will reflect on current, crisis-ridden developments, and discuss educational approaches and challenges for social work.

Education and Covid-19 in marginalised communities – the South African Case

Covid-19 caught the world off-guard. South Africa is struggling with over-extended health systems and social welfare needs. S.A. is known as one of the most unequal societies in the world. The pandemic placed the spotlight on these inequalities. The critical question is how the social work profession responds to this. As many students in South Africa come from marginalised communities, they are both recipients of an unequal system while also responding to the needs of people. How can we engage around inequalities affecting the health and wellbeing of vulnerable groups during times of crisis?


The human right to education in a state of permanent crisis

Education is often seen as a panacea and the strongest driver of development and prosperity. This lecture reflects on the global educational situation, especially with regard to school education, on the basis of human rights-based criteria. From this perspective, education is not just an instrument or an investment in human capital, but first and foremost a human right, for which - even crisis-resistant - well-founded standards exist. The Corona crisis seems like a "burning glass", because it clearly shows the problems that already exist, and also reinforces them.
