Session Abstract

There has been much important work in recent years to redefine what we teach in music theory courses and to address how the content and delivery method of our curricula connects to broader social structures. In this presentation, two professors will share how their work is contributing to our discipline’s curricular reimagining.

Dr. Adem Birson (NYU Steinhardt), will share his experience of integrating global music perspectives into the undergraduate theory curriculum. He will demonstrate how their courses use Auralia & Musition as a teaching tool and to improve student feedback and accessibility. Adem will also provide a tour of the new global music content in Auralia & Musition.

Trevor deClercq (MTSU), will unveil his new undergraduate music theory textbook ‘The Practice of Popular Music’ (Routledge), which offers a framework for integrating popular music into the theory curriculum. He will discuss the challenges of meeting the real-world needs of his students, and present pathways for supporting students with non-notation and notation-based backgrounds. He will also demonstrate some of the supporting workbook activities available in Auralia & Musition.

This presentation will provide insights and strategies for anyone interested in making their music theory courses more relevant, engaging, and inclusive.
