The SMT Dance and Movement Interest Group is organizing a baroque dance workshop and discussion session with Catherine Turocy, the artistic director of the New York Baroque Dance Company and a leading voice in baroque dance research and historical music performance. Turocy will join us via Zoom. The event consists of a practical session where attendees will learn dances integral to the baroque suite, and a group discussion with Turocy. We will interrogate pressing music-theoretical issues, including how knowledge of the dance enriches or challenges our understanding of the music (e.g., the counterpoint between musical and danced rhythms, understandings of meter), potential novel avenues for embodied perspectives in music theory, and how music theory pedagogy can benefit from both dance and the embodied turn.
