Session Abstract

The Music Informatics Interest Group will be hosting two back-to-back corpus studies workshops at SMT this year during our 90-minute group meeting. Both workshops are open to all SMT members. Accessibility will be the main focus, so we particularly encourage those with little to no computational corpus-study experience to attend! Our first session, led by Nat Condit-Schultz, will be an open-ended tutorial-like session, where attendees will work with Nat to ask basic questions of precompiled music databases. Users will enter commands in real time, working in a pre-installed virtual environment with packages already loaded. We will download the virtual environment at the start of the session, so no prior setup is required. Nick Shea will lead the second session to explore a specific research question — what are the methodological stakes when we build our samples around artist diversity? Here, attendees will use some of their code from the first session to observe differences in musical-feature organization between groups of artists of various ethnic, racial, and gender identities. All workshop materials will be made available immediately after the workshop in the form of a guided tutorial document. All SMT members are highly encouraged to attend!
