Rosemary Batt on "Regulating Finance for Decent Work: Bringing Capital Back In"

Session Abstract

Keynote address by Rosemary Batt on “Regulating finance for decent work: Bringing capital back in”

Research on regulating decent work has grown substantially over the last decade, with critical studies of precarious work, global supply chains, and the need for stronger national and international labor standards. This keynote seeks to complement that body of work by bringing finance capital back into the discussion and presenting an agenda for research to enhance our understanding of how to regulate finance for decent work as well.

Rosemary Batt is the Alice H. Cook Professor of Women and Work at the ILR School, Cornell University, and Professor in Global Labor and Work and HR Studies. Her recent research focuses on globalization, financialization, and financial actors such as private equity. She specializes in low wage service industries, including healthcare, call centers, restaurants, fast food franchising, and telecommunications. She has published widely on management and labor relations issues. She is co-author with Eileen Appelbaum of Private Equity at Work: How Wall Street Manages Main Street.
