Plenary 3: Industry 4.0
Speakers: A. Ashuah (Digital Forming), T. Fautré (Siemens), G. Gramelsberger (RWTH Aachen), W. Koch (Schaeffler AG), S. Massard (3DS/Dassault Systèmes R&D)
Engineering and R&D in Times of Industry 4.0
While Industry 4.0 has been discussed primarily in the context of operational efficiency and manufacturing, we believe that it also has profound implications for the Engineering and R&D function. These functions are currently changed by concepts like the digital twin and digital shadow, the development of a new generation of PLM systems, cross-industry data exchange along the entire life cycle, AI/ML algorithms providing decision support, but also generative design, and the rise of industrial business ecosystems.
The motivation of the panel is threefold:
- to develop a better understanding what is happing in industry today at the interface between Industry 4.0 and engineering (development);
- to learn about new skills and capabilities required in established industrial companies and reflect on the ideas of creativity and innovation in times of AI/ML;
- to reflect on open questions for research, based on the needs and priorities of practice.
