Armand Hatchuel is Full Professor and co-head of the chair of Design theory and methods for innovation at MinesParisTech-PSL University. He pioneered research on the cognitive dynamics of collective action and on the impact of management methods on the production of new knowledge. Since 2003, he has developed with Benoit Weil and Pascal Le Masson, a new design theory (called C-K theory) that models creative reasoning and the generative logic of new objects and new collectives. C-K theory has been discussed in Engineering, cognitive psychology, management and philosophical journals. It gave birth to the international group on Design theory. Applications of C-K theory had a strong impact on how innovation is organized in worldwide companies. He has published extensively and is member of journal and scientific boards. He received several scientific and national awards. He is member of the French national academy of technologies and fellow of the Design Society. He has co-authored: ”Strategic Management of innovation and design”,(2013) at Cambridge University Press and “Design theory” at Springer (2017). Recently, his work with Blanche Segrestin and the College des Bernardins about the redefinition of the corporation as a creative and responsible collective has inspired the new French corporation Law (Loi Pacte). He is currently columnist for management issues at the newspaper Le Monde.
Deconstructing R&D: Empirical and Conceptual Lessons From C-K Theory

In recent years, C-K design theory (Hatchuel and Weil, 2003, 2009) has contributed to give formal foundations to the science of Design by introducing the logic of the unknown and extending Decision Theory with the generation of new alternatives. This program unified the logic of creativity with the knowledge dynamics and independences that are specific to cognitive and social requisits of innovation. C-K theory has also inspired the development of well documented new methods and processes for innovation management (exploratory projects, bioinspiration..), strategy (KCP Labs, double-unknown technology design..) and governance . Such advancements have contributed to install design theory as a paradigm shift discussed in several fields (Engineering, management, creativity, epistemology...). Based on cumulated empirical evidence and literature, this master class will provide an overview of the principles and operational implications of C-K theory for both management and research.
Innovation, from Business Value Creation to Capability Creation
Stim is a start-up that helps companies implementing innovation methods, notably based on C-K design theory. Frédéric Arnoux, Stim CEO and co-founder, will present the result of an experimental project conducted at Société Générale focusing on capability maximization from innovation projects. The mechanisms that will be presented have been applied to over 60 startups part of the Internal Startup Call program, the biggest Intrapreneurship program in France in 2018. The advantages of using a typology and theoretical description of capabilities to be able to identify them on the field, as well as the impact of involving an external partner in such a program, will be discussed. The project results entail important implications for innovation performance indicators and objectives, as well as for the definition and valuation of the return on investments of innovation projects.
Frédéric Arnoux is the CEO and the co-founder of Stim, a start-up that helps companies implementing innovation methods, such as the C-K method, backed by scientific research and academic studies. Before launching Stim, Frédéric worked on a doctoral thesis at the Mines ParisTech and wrote two books about innovation in established companies. He has a thorough knowledge in innovation in business contexts in theory and in practice.
