Transformative agreements are currently one important instrument to create a irreversible shift away from the still existing subscription and paywall system. Their goal is to carry subscriptions over to open access within a defined process and offer authors a way to publish open access directly in their preferred journals. Transformative agreements considerably increase the proportion of new journal articles published directly open access.
Although the first DEAL contracts in Germany are regarded as a major milestone in implementing such agreements on a national level, other European countries already have a multi-year history with transformative agreements. The goal of the workshop is to exchange experciences and to identify best practices for the further development of transformative agreements along the following guiding questions: - To what extent have transformation agreements been able to increase the open access share of journal articles in hybrid journals to date? - How is the financing of transformation agreements organised for participating academic institutions? Are there central financing or central grants? How are the financial contributions of the institutions participating in the contracts measured? - Are there strategic plans for the further development of transformation contracts, especially with regard to Plan S? The presenters (Anna Lundén / National Library Sweden, Amy Devenny & Anna Vernon / Jisc, Antje Kellersohn / DEAL, Arjan Schalken / UKBsis, Brigitte Kromp/ KEMÖ, N.N. /FinElib) will give impulse talks about the experiences in their countries, which are compared and discussed together with the workshop participants. The result of the workshop is a jointly developed document summarising the presentations and discussions and setting out some guidelines for the further development of transformative agreements.
