The Derisory Position of Tamazight in the Multilingual Linguistic Landscape of Tizi-Ouzou

Youcef HATEM

Université Mouloud Mammeri Tizi Ouzou, Algérie

This article explores the problematic position of Tamazight in the multilingual linguistic landscape of the city of Tizi-Ouzou which is the Capital City, of Kabylia. Tizi-Ouzou where foreign languages such as French and English are far more visible than the local/national and official language, Tamazight. Tizi-Ouzou is the geographical, cultural and political capital of Kabylia which has been the seat of Tamazight renaissance and the major field battle of the struggle for linguistic rights whose landmarks are 1980 and 2021 Black Spring. Given the undefeated commitment and the enormous sacrifices of the local population, one expects to discover Tamazight, the cheval de bataille, proudly displayed in bottom-up signs. The findings uncover an insignificant place of Tamazight on the front of shops isolated and visibly defying. Furthermore, top-down signs are more visible on the front of public buildings and street signs. French, Arabic and even English outpace Tamazight which appears timidly and do not seem to interest the linguistic landscape which can be a source of revitalization and promotion. Since 1980, the memorable year of the Berber Spring which came to the forefront after a conference on the Amazigh poetry had been forbidden, very few people considered the importance of Tamazight in the local linguistic landscape. Non-static signs (slogans and signs on shirts mainly and tattoos) have recently become trendy while static signs seem uninteresting. Interviews and data collection (analyzed pictures) are the methodological tools that will enlighten as regards the derisory position of Tamazight in the multilingual linguistic landscape of Tizi-Ouzou.
