A Playful Approach to Indigenous Language and Culture Learning: A Community-Designed Card Game

Tereza Hlavackova

Charles Darwin University, Australia

This study, conducted in northern Australia with speakers of the Kunwinjku language, explores the possibilities of a co-created learning resource to address language shift towards English. Through participatory action research, the author and community members designed a set of playing cards to support language and knowledge transmission. The cards feature images of Kunwinjku food knowledge and represent cultural and environmental knowledge and language that are important for the community to transmit. The cards are destined for both community members and visitors. Their versatility encourages people to use their own language repertoire and practice translanguaging. The cards can also empower people to participate by inviting them to share their knowledge. This study highlights the potential of a culturally grounded, community-driven initiative to address language shift and support Indigenous language and culture revitalization efforts.
