Artificial Intelligence and Learning Analytics in Higher Education: Global trends, insights, and implications

Emerging technologies such as intelligent tutoring systems, virtual simulations, and generative AI are reshaping higher education, offering increased opportunities to personalise learning, deliver tailored feedback, and foster more interactive learning environments. Yet the mere presence of AI or any digital tool does not guarantee meaningful student engagement or deep learning. Likewise, while learning analytics are frequently used to predict and track achievement, they often fall short of capturing the full spectrum of engagement. Drawing on findings from multiple systematic reviews, this presentation will examine how AI and learning analytics are being implemented around the world to support learning, predict outcomes, and enhance teaching practices across disciplines. Practical strategies for higher education institutions and educators will be shared, along with key priorities for future international research.
