Each year the ACLCA/SETAC working group on "Life Cycle Assessment of Emerging Technologies" meets for a full day preceding the ISSST conference. This year, we are proposing to meet on Sunday, June 15 from approximately 9am-5pm. This is a working meeting in which we recap past work by the group, advance ongoing work to provide guidance for the LCA community, and plan for future topics of interest that the group will explore. These meetings generally serve as the launching point for an academic manuscript co-authored by a wide range of interested parties.

Past topics have included: general guidance on LCA of emerging technologies as supplemental advice beyond the ISO 14040 and 14044 standards; discussion of contentious issues such as treatment of uncertainty or appropriate use of LCA (currently undergoing peer-review); and exploration of data quality indicators and what they say about the 'depth' of the LCA study with reference to the special requirements of pre-commercial technologies or lab-scale technologies.

While the focus will be on advancing our work in progress, newcomers are always welcome! Members of the ISSST community are welcome to join for any part of the session that may interest them.

DETAILED SCHEDULE AND GOALS BELOW:

Objective: Advance our “Tiers of LCA” paper – goal to have a draft matrix by the end of the day

The paper intends to develop categories of LCA consistent with different levels of detail and data quality, to help standardize and communicate the LCA is done on early-stage technologies. Initial brainstorming occurred at ISSST 2024 and ACLCA 2024, and was advanced through periodic virtual meetings. At ISSST 2025, we will dive back in as part of this working session to advance the deliverables from the project.

9 am intros and background, progress to date, objectives for the day and organizing working groups
