The extraction and creative application of cultural elements of silk archives from the perspective of design 1China National Silk Archives(Memory of the World Konwledge Center-Suzhou),China; 2Suzhou Archives,China Short Description This paper interprets the design of silk archives in China Silk Archives, analyzes the design elements contained in silk archives from the modeling attributes, functional attributes and connotation attributes, and constructs the gene library of silk archives design elements. Taking the cultural creative products of China National Silk Archives as an example, this paper analyzes the process of extraction, transformation, abstraction and reconstruction of cultural design elements. Abstract The archives resources cover many detailed records of social life, art and culture, and the development of science and technology. They contain rich creative resources. The silk archives collected by China National Silk Archives in Suzhou record the development and changes of Suzhou silk industry in the past century. The silk archives include not only a large number of paper carrier archives, but also many physical archives or sample archives related to silk, which provides a rich source of material and inspiration for the development of cultural creative products of silk archives. Cultural creative industry is a new direction of subdivision under the discipline of industrial design, which belongs to the category of product design.Mark E. Parry believes that product attributes are divided into internal attributes, external attributes, and performance attributes. Internal attributes refer to the physical composition of the product, including the color, texture, and other aspects of the product; external attributes are product spirit or culture, including relevant historical background, historical stories, characters, etc.;the performance attribute is the functional attribute, including the symbolic function, the practical function and the aesthetic function. It is an attribute that connects the internal and external attributes, and is the way in which the product plays a role. The higher the matching degree between product attributes and consumer demand, the more popular the product is.By analyzing the original carrier of cultural and creative products and sorting out the elements that can be used for creative design,it is helpful to transform them into product characteristics with modern aesthetics, cultural language and practical functions. This paper applies the research on product attribute theory in design to the development of cultural creative products of silk archives, and extracts the design elements from the three aspects of product attributes of silk archives,so as to provide a gene library of design elements for subsequent cultural creative product design. At the same time, taking the cultural creative products of Chinese National Silk Archives as an example, this paper analyzes the process of extracting, transforming, abstracting and reconstructing the design elements contained in silk archives,so as to provide theoretical support and experience reference for public service, professional research, archives development and utilization of archives departments. Integrating Archives into Digital Construction of Cultural Spaces from the Perspective of Cultural and Tourism Integration: A Case Study of "Digital Zengdi" 1Shandong University, China; 2University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA Short Description This paper presents the "Digital Zengdi" project as a practical framework for integrating archives into digital cultural spaces by outlining a "platform + site + museum" model and a "cultural digitalization + tourism digitalization" approach. By leveraging archival resources and digital tools, the digital construction of cultural spaces reinterprets historical narratives and presents interactive visualizations for immersive mixed-reality experiences. Abstract This paper presents the "Digital Zengdi" project as a practical framework for integrating archives into digital cultural spaces by outlining a "platform + site + museum" model and a "cultural digitalization + tourism digitalization" approach. By leveraging archival resources and digital tools, the digital construction of cultural spaces reinterprets historical narratives and presents interactive visualizations for immersive mixed-reality experiences. However, many current digital cultural platforms focus on individual experiences but lack multi-user functions, limiting social interaction and cultural immersion. The "Digital Zengdi" project addresses this by fostering social connection, reconstructing historical contexts, and incorporating local narratives to evoke emotional resonance. As original records, Archives could provide unique historical value, convey cultural knowledge, and foster collective memory. Therefore, multifunctional digital spaces based on archival materials can offer immersive experiences that combine social interaction, education, entertainment, and emotional connection. Zengdi, a historic hydraulic causeway at Daming Lake in Jinan, was built during the Song Dynasty under the guidance of the renowned scholar Zeng Gong. It stands as a symbol of Zeng’s dedication to social service and his innovative water management approach. The "Digital Zengdi" project reimagines the site by using WeChat Developer Tools and HBuilder X to create an integrated digital platform that unifies core functions for tourists, merchants, and administrators. An archival database is created as a source of creative inspiration, including Zeng Gong’s collected works, local records, historical documents, and contemporary research. The project integrates digital technologies to analyze and visualize archival data, transforming static archival resources into dynamic cultural interaction platforms. Visitors can also create and share their reflections and creative content in real-time, encouraging collective participation. This approach also enhances cultural exchange, strengthens shared memory, and contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage. The proposed solution is adaptable and replicable and the team will continue to explore deeper integration of archival culture, the potential of archives, preserving cultural memory, and fostering coexistence between people, nature, and society. Blueprints of Memory: Bridging Archives and Urban Planning for Cultural Sustainability Sharjah Archives, United Arab Emirates Short Description This paper explores how archives intersect with urban planning, preserving cultural memory and guiding sustainable development. By integrating archival resources, cities can honor heritage, engage communities, and design spaces reflecting collective identity. Using Sharjah as a case study, it demonstrates how archives bridge past and future, fostering culturally resilient and inclusive urban environments. Abstract This paper explores the dynamic overlap of archive preservation and urban planning, focusing on the role of preserving cultural memory and shaping sustainable urban development. Archives are vital repositories of a city’s historical narratives, documenting its architectural heritage, socio-cultural practices, and collective identity. Urban planning, on the other hand, is the process of shaping physical spaces to accommodate societal needs and growth. By integrating archives into urban planning, cities can create environments that honor their historical and cultural legacy while managing modern challenges. The study uses Sharjah, a culturally rich emirate in the United Arab Emirates, to illustrate this intersection's practical applications. As a UNESCO-recognized cultural hub, Sharjah demonstrates how archives can inform urban projects that preserve heritage while promoting innovation. The paper examines key initiatives, such as revitalizing the Heart of Sharjah, which relied extensively on archival resources to restore historical architecture and cultural landscapes. Through the lens of Sharjah’s experience, the paper highlights several core themes: the preservation of cultural heritage, the role of archives in shaping collective memory, and the promotion of community engagement through inclusive urban planning. It also explores how archival records can guide the sustainable development of urban spaces, ensuring resilience and adaptability to future demands. The findings demonstrate that incorporating archival materials into urban planning enriches the design process, making cities more inclusive, historically informed, and culturally vibrant. In doing so, archives and urban planning work together to build functional spaces and meaningful environments that connect the past, present, and future. Archival holdings of political organizations of the Communist Party in regional archives in Croatia State Archives in Zagreb, Croatia Short Description This paper gives an overview of archival holdings of the political organizations of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia maintained at regional Archives in Croatia. It examines the context of creation of said archival holdings, the state of their preservation and practices regarding their accession in Archives. The paper also focuses on their appraisal, the research possibilities, the role they play regarding memories and identities of the period and their accessibility to the public. Abstract The aim of this paper is to give an overview of archival holdings of the political organizations of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia maintained at regional Archives in Croatia, with focus on the archival holdings of regional archives, but also in relation to relevant archival holdings in the Croatian National Archives. The paper will, firstly, examine the context of creation of said archival holdings, as well as the state of its preservation and practices regarding its accession in Archives. Moreover, it will put in focus problems of appraisal of the archival holdings of political organizations and give an overview of potential ways they can be used for research in history, sociology and political sciences. The Communist Party of Yugoslavia (later renamed to the League of Communists of Yugoslavia) was the only legal political party in Yugoslavia, and Croatia as part of it, from 1945 to 1990. As such it had a key influence on all aspects of society. It had a complex hierarchy and its organizations ranged from those that covered a single village, city street or economic organization to the regional, state and federal levels. In addition, there also existed the so-called socio-political organizations, that weren’t part of the Communist Party, but were closely associated with it, and that dealt with specific areas, such as youth, war veterans, or union organizations. The Communist Party and its organizations weren’t subject to the law that regulated the work of Archives and therefore Archives weren’t able to have an overview of their holdings. After the fall of communism and the dissolution of the League of Communists and its organizations, their documents ended partly in Archives, and partly were neglected and lost. The need to arrange and process that material raised also the question of its appraisal, especially in regional Archives, whose holdings comprised the documents of local and regional organizations, and therefore are often esteemed to be of smaller value. The archival holdings of the Communist Party and its organizations are of crucial importance for exploration of collective memories of the period, as well as for reconciliation of opposite views regarding said period, on the basis of reassessment of its positive and negative aspects. Furthermore, it remains to find the optimal way of making these holdings accessible to the public, both through digitization and publication. | ||
