This panel includes selected papers submitted for an up-coming Special issue of the Journal for African Development (JAD) on women’s lived realities, their marginalisation and exploitation in formal and informal sectors in Zimbabwe, Cameroon and Uganda as well as traditional and non-traditional strategies for employment and economic empowerment and development. It highlights: women’s role in economic development; opportunities and challenges of women in micro small and medium sized enterprises, (MSMEs); the impact of the COVID pandemic and women’s coping strategies; micro-credit programmes as a strategy for women’s economic empowerment; women in livestock farming in Uganda; and the exploitation of women's labour on floricultural farms in Uganda.

Titles of the papers are: 1 ) The Role of Women in Economic Development. The Case of Mbare, Zimbabwe. 2) Women in micro and small enterprises: An appraisal of the profile and experiences of women entrepreneurs in North-western Cameroon; 3) Micro-credit Programmes as an economic empowerment strategy for women in poor resourced settings: Exploring women’ struggles and resilience. 4) Women’s Economic Engagement in the Cattle Corridor Districts of Uganda. 5) Effects of COVID-19 Lock down on Small and Micro Entrepreneurs in Kampala: Gender Experiences and Coping Strategies. 6) Victims of their bodies: Capitalism and exploitation of women's labour on floricultural farms in Uganda.. These studies represent opportunities for rethinking economic development and identifying strategies for women's empowerment in African countries from a feminist perspective.
