Session Abstract

Caring labor and care economy have been central concepts in feminist economics. The discussion around care work has been framed primarily in the context of gender distribution of labor, women’s unpaid work, interactions with the market sphere and implications for gender inequalities. A strand of applied policy research studies since the 2010s place the issue in an encompassing macroeconomic framework and explore the implications of investing in care beyond gender equality. This emerging research and policy discourse traces the linkages from the care economy to employment creation, fiscal policy, intersectional inequalities and poverty, inclusive, resilient and sustainable economies. The plenary brings together speakers to explore these macroeconomic perspectives on investing in care and their policy implications in the context of the theme of the conference: feminist economics strategies for an equitable and sustainable world .
