|
This memorial session will honor the life, career, and impact of Daniel C. Benyshek (1969–2025), a medical anthropologist and human biologist whose work advanced our understanding of maternal nutrition, metabolic health, and cultural practices surrounding birth and postpartum care. A professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, his research ranged from clinical studies to long-term community collaborations and was recognized for its interdisciplinary depth and applied relevance. Colleagues and former students will share reflections on Dan’s scientific contributions—spanning the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD), intergenerational effects of maternal diabetes and obesity, and human placentophagy. Speakers will highlight Dan’s distinctive approach to research: a combination of methodological rigor, openness to unconventional questions, and deep respect for the communities with whom he worked. Equally central to this session will be Dan’s role as a mentor and colleague. Those who worked alongside him will recall his generosity with time and ideas, his steady encouragement of students’ professional and personal growth, and his deep commitment to creating a supportive, inclusive research environment. | ||
