Breakout Session: Building resources for community engaged research in human biology: Gathering member feedback and determining next steps
| ||
| Session Abstract | ||
|
Community engaged research is increasingly prevalent within anthropology. While some disciplines across the subfields have engaged in robust, formal discussion of expectations for community engaged practices, conversations in human biology have been largely informal. This has resulted in variable access to shared knowledge and collective experiences on conducting community engaged projects within human biology. Based on the discussions held during the 2025 HBA breakout session entitled “Researcher and community partner reflections from the field: Leveraging community engagement to promote ethical research practice”, an ad hoc committee of HBA members began developing a set of resources for our organization to support human biologists interested in community engaged work. In this breakout session we will introduce a set of initial resources, including case studies of existing community engaged projects, and an evolving appendix of resources summarizing key terminology and concepts in community engaged approaches. We will also present a draft HBA position statement describing the importance of community engaged studies, highlighting several challenges to this work, and affirming our commitment as an organization to community engaged research. Our goal is to solicit feedback from HBA members on these resources and plan next steps, including the development of researcher networking tools, resources co-authored with existing community partners, and manuscripts summarizing the work. These resources are intended to provide HBA members with the information and tools needed to learn more about community engaged research approaches and identify methodologies that best align with their specific projects. | ||
