Session Abstract | ||
According to the Sustainable Development Report 2024, European countries – notably the Nordic countries – top the 2024 SDG Index. Finland ranks first, followed by Sweden (#2), Denmark (#3), Germany (#4), and France (#5). Yet even these countries face significant challenges in meeting several SDGs. On average, only 16 percent of the SDG targets are on track to be met globally by 2030, with the remaining 84 percent showing limited progress or a reversal of progress. At the global level, SDG progress has been stagnant since 2020, with SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) particularly off track. What role can IB scholars in Finland take in accelerating the SDG agenda either at the national or global level? What is needed to align corporate and national agendas to accelerate action towards achieving the SDGs? This panel discusses how frameworks for teaching, research and engagement can enhance corporate action on the SDGs. Representatives from leading Finnish universities will share their experience in integrating SDG-related themes like circular business models, digitalization, value co-creation, double materiality, and CSRD in their research and teaching. The session will launch the Global Sustainability Poster Competition 2025, a global initiative endorsed by the United Nations and several Academy of International Business (AIB) chapters (more details: https://www.aib-uki.org/poster-competition.html). The panel aims at supporting a network of Finnish universities that is able to pool resources on getting students, scholars and companies aligned around the SDGs – taking the leading role of Finland in implementing the SDGs into account as an enabling condition for further progress. | ||
