Round Table Session: Unlocking and Uncovering Diverse Voices in Musical Settings
Chair(s): Dimitrakoulakos, Demosthenes (International School of Luxembourg), O'Connell, Lorraine (Technological University Dublin), Spieker, Benno (Institute: ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Enschede)
How do different voices and perspectives shape music education and the learning environment in schools and beyond? Whose voices are heard? A positive “shaping of music education futures” necessitates empowering multiple voices through inclusive engagement.
The purpose of this round table is trifold: 1) To explore the different concepts of what “voice” means in music education settings; 2) To hear from a learner, teacher, parent, school administrator and policymaker perspective what it means for their voice to be valued and the wider impact this may have on their schools and external communities; and 3) To engage in a series of simultaneous open round tables in which attendees will explore and discuss ideas on how we can include, support and appreciate the multiple “voices” in our musical settings moving forward. An adaptation of Rudd et al (2006) ‘Levels of Learner Participation’ will be used to structure and guide these round table discussions. Participants will be asked to consider their roles in informing, consulting, involving, collaborating and ultimately empowering diverse voices in music education. The aim is to facilitate all involved in considering how to adapt to changing educational landscapes (in and outside of traditional school settings), and how to foster collaboration within communities into the future. This round table will conclude with a sharing of ideas, to encourage an openness to help all musical “voices” be seen, heard and valued and importantly, to identify the ‘next steps’ we should take in this regard.
As such, this round table will address the conference theme “Unlocking Voices – Shaping Music Education Futures” and the question “How can music education meet the challenges of contemporary settings to ensure that all voices are heard and included?”
*This round table, while organised by the EAS National Coordinators, is open to all delegates.
