Choral and Ethnographic Group “Os Camponeses de Pias”
The “Os Camponeses de Pias” Choral and Ethnographic Group was founded in 1968 with the aim of interpreting the region’s beautiful traditional songs. By choosing to wear the mid-20th-century agricultural costumes complete with working tools, they added the colors of the fields, underscoring the close bond between their singing and the rural landscape. Their meticulous presentation of these outfits has earned them numerous awards over the years.
Under the direction of Barão Cachola, the precision and quality of their performances won them the respect of fellow ensembles and the attention of the wider musical community. This led, in 1973, to the recording of an LP and an appearance on RTP’s ZIP ZIP program, and they became founding members of the Portuguese Folklore Federation.
“Os Camponeses de Pias” have been invited to participate in a variety of musical projects. Their portfolio includes collaborations with Vitorino Salomé, Lua Extravagante, and Janita Salomé. At Lisbon’s Pavilhão Atlântico they have accompanied Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia, as well as Rio Grande, Ala dos Namorados, and Paulo Ribeiro. They have also appeared on numerous national and international television shows, in telenovelas and documentaries, and have both organized and taken part in folklore festivals.
In 2003 they released the CD Pias Tradição Musical, and in 2013 the compilation O Cante à Moda de Pias. They are members of the Confraria do Cante Alentejano and, from the very beginning, supported the nomination of Alentejo singing for UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Their headquarters is the “Taberna dos Camponeses de Pias,” where one can enjoy singing, taste fine wines, and savor the local specialties.
