he realisation that there is now an urgent need to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide from industrial activities and the recognition of heat pumps as an attractive alternative to direct electrical heating have created a great deal of interest in the development of equipment to deliver heat well above the temperatures usually considered feasible for heat pump systems. This has created numerous challenges for system designers, compressor manufacturers and equipment operators, particularly for systems delivering heat in the range 80°C to 180°C required for many cooking, drying and, distilling processes as well as for general steam raising. Our panel of experts will consider these challenges from a wide range of perspectives including research, applications and materials compatibility.

The panel will be chaired by Dr Andy Pearson, Group Managing Director of Star Refrigeration Ltd who has had a long involvement in industrial heat pump systems using ammonia and carbon dioxide as working fluids, including some of the most innovative and award winning projects of the last 20 years. Andy has worked for Star in Glasgow on industrial cooling and heating systems since 1986. He is past President of the Institute of Refrigeration and past President of the Institution of Engineers in Scotland, and is a former plenary speaker at the City University Conference, the Purdue Conference and the International Congress of Refrigeration.
